Lyon got to go to the Dew Tour on Saturday and he had the time of his life! We where given all access passes, so there was nowhere that we were not allowed to go. He met all of his favorite riders, took pictures with them and was given 3 autographed jerseys. It was truly the perfect way to spend our last day in Cleveland.
We flew home smoothly on Sunday morning. Lyon came home with his drains and a smile from here to Cleveland. L.A. smog never smelt so good! We arrived home to be surprised by a welcome home party. A group of Lyon's friends decorated the house with balloons, cards and flowers. They had a cake made that read, "Courage Shines From Within". Randy was here as well to get it all on tape. It was a sweet welcoming and it felt so good to be home.
He is doing beyond remarkable! He is walking upright, has not taken any pain medication since Friday and is as happy as can be.
We went to the plastic surgeon here in L.A. today. They removed his drains and said that he is healing up beautifully. They said that he could try and get back in the ocean in 8 weeks. Lyon is counting down the days!
Thank you for everyone's love and support through out this journey. The prayers have done there job. He is a walking miracle and an inspiration to all!
I have been asked several times if the surgery was a success. Yes it was! The Doctor said that he was able to remove the entire tumor and the abdominal repair was a success. They removed 5 packs of a 6 pack of muscle, but it does not seem to be bothering him much. He will be scanned every 6 months for tumor recurrence and we will just take it one day at time.
I will continue to keep everybody updated on his progress and any exciting events.
We hope to see you all at the surf contest in August!

We love you all!
Barbie & Lyon

Discharged!!!

Hello everyone,
He is out of the hospital and doing well! They discharged him at 9:30 am and we have never been happier. We are that much closer to going home. We wheeled him back to the hotel and propped up some pillows on the bed, and he made himself comfortable. Tonight we will sleep without all the disturbing beeps and distractions from the hospital. Today was pretty
uneventful for him. He laid low most of the day, resting and enjoying his freedom. He did get sick once but he has felt fine
since then. He definitely has his sense of humor back, wanting to laugh and make us laugh. The only problem is that it hurts
him so bad to use his stomach, so when we laugh, he makes us turn around. It's pretty funny! He's looking forward to Saturday's Dew Tour but most of all, looking forward to coming home and seeing everyone! We are
counting down the days.

And here he is.......Lyon himself!!!!!!

HEY GUYS.......its Lyon, I just wanna tell you that I am doing sooo well!! You cannot imagine how much I miss you all. It has
been a little rough, but you know me, I can handle it!! I can't wait to see you all. It has been hard not seeing my friends for so long! Cleveland is not my ideal vacation place, and I am dieing to be home. Imagine going to Hawaii, or say Honolulu with NO ocean. I was kind of thinking about having a little coming home party. Well there is my story...and I would just like to say THANK YOU to everyone who supported me during my surgery. I love you all; I just want to say that you guys put a smile to my face and brought a tear to my eye. Besides, yesterday I was feeling pretty discouraged, and so was Lyon. It was the hardest day emotionally for him so far. He spent the night before and most of yesterday vomiting and not feeling well. The GI team ordered an ultrasound to check for fluids in his abdomen. They wanted to find the cause of his vomiting. So we went to radiology and what they thought they would find, is what they found. There was fluid around the incision and they found a blood clot in his abdomen. They decided to give him 24 hours and see how he would do, if he could hold down any food. He did great last night and today he asked to eat breakfast for the first time. He did not eat much, but he ate and kept it down. He took two walks to the fish tank and I pushed him around outdoors in the wheelchair.
Our plastic surgeon came by in the early afternoon and was very pleased with today's progress. He said the blood clot will probably work itself out and the fluid will continue to drain through his tubes. We asked him when he could be released and he said, "how's tomorrow?" Lyon is over the moon! His whole attitude has changed. We will be staying at our hotel until Sunday, which is connected to the hospital, in case of emergencies. We also just got the confirmation that we will be going to the Dew Tour on Saturday. Yeah!!!
Today he received a sweet care package from some of his friends in our neighborhood. Thank you so much girls!!!! The cookies were great and the nurses loved their socks! We also received the sweetest cards from a loving group at a Baptist Church Sunday school in N Carolina. That brought tears to my eyes. What perfect strangers, Thank you for your love and prayers! We also had a gentleman come over from the Kabbalah center here in Cleveland and scan the Zohar for him.
I love the diversity that comes together at these trying times to share their love and support. It truly is a beautiful thing!!
Thank you to everyone for everything you have done for us! We look forward to a gentle and speedy recovery!
Lots of Love!!!
Barbie & Lyon

More Tomorrow

Hi All,
Well, the blog is coming from Malibu tonight. He woke up happy and sounded like his old self for most of the day. He got up, walked to the bathroom, and even walked down the hall without holding on to anything. It was so exciting!! The nurse even took out his catheter because he had become so mobile. On the way back from his walk, the last IV got pulled out. All of the others where pulled out as well. He had three to begin with. I was in shock that they had even gotten one in. Lyon truly has no veins to begin with. They are all so damaged from years of treatment, and collapse whenever you do find one. This last IV was the impute of his fluids, pain medication, antibiotics and anti nausea medicine. After about 10 tries, in 10 locations from about 6 different medical personnel, they were unsuccessful. His pain began to come on strong so they decided to give him a shot of morphine in his arm in the muscle. After about 15 minutes he started to feel relief. They also gave him some percodan and oxy codeine, which did not do much. This has all happened tonight, so I am going to stay with him and give him some motherly love and support until they can figure out the best way to manage this situation.
He is such a trooper through all of this. He has really taken what he has learned in the past on how to manage his own pain, and applied it. He closes his eyes and does some deep breathing. He never tenses up or screams. It is quite incredible to watch such a young man go through so much with such heroism.
The Doctors came in earlier in the day and they were so pleased with his progression that they said that he could probably be released by the end of the week, if things continue to go well. That was very encouraging to hear. We are all ready to go home!!! He is becoming restless and misses all of his friends so much. They are all such a huge part of his life and his heart. If things go well, we will be home on Sunday!! :)
Well, I need to head back over there and take over for Dale. My mom will stay with Harper tonight.
Keep the prayers coming please!
We Love You All!!!
Barbie & Lyon

Rollercoaster of a day!!!

Hello,
Last night and today have been an absolute roller coaster!!!!! Darrell stayed with him last night and he was up all night with him all night. He was in so much pain and was vomiting throughout the night. The nurses called the Doctor around 3:30 am, because his stomach had become distended from fluids. Nothing was passing through him because his intestines were still asleep from the anesthesia and the pain medication. All the water and the little food that he did eat had no where to go, so they put a drainage tube down his nose into his stomach to release all of the waste. It did relieve him somewhat, but when I got there at 5:30 am, he was still in bad shape. Darrell was off to the airport and I fell into a bit of a panic. Lyon was at his worst and our support team was no longer there. If we would have known, no one would have left!! My mom and Dale where to arrive in the late afternoon, but I was alone with the baby until then. The nurses on call where amazing and helped hold the baby when Lyon needed me most. At around noon, we encouraged him to try and get up. He said he needed 30 more minutes. I had him start to move his shoulders and ankles around to try and get some circulation going. At around 12:45, he stood up and walked to the bathroom!!!!!!! He sat for a while and turned around and walked back. We then had him sit in a chair for one hour. He gradually started to come back around. Opening his eyes more often and talking a little bit more. Throughout the day, he got up and walked 5 different times! They where also able to remove the tube from his nose. The nurse listened to his bowels, and they appeared to be awakening. They allowed him to drink water again, but still no food. Maybe by tomorrow he will be doing well enough to have a small meal.
When my mom and Dale finally saw him, he was like a new kid. I feel so relieved to have them here. They are staying in the room right across from me and our new support team has arrived! Thank God for family. I just left the hospital where Lyon and Dale where watching "Dust to Glory", and having some good ol boys time.
Lyon is hoping that he will be better by Saturday so that he can attend the Dew Tour. It is in Cleveland this weekend and a sweet friend of his, and her mother, were able to get us special tickets. It is giving him something to get better for. Definitely a good motivational tool! For those of you who do not know, the Dew Tour is a competition of extreme sports....motocross, skate boarding ect.. Thank you to that sweet friend!!!!
I know so many of you have been praying, especially today for him to walk. Well, once again the prayers have been answered! He is a little miracle and it is only going to get better from here. My fingers are crossed that we will be coming home next Sunday. We are all ready to come back Malibu, and to smell the beautiful, salty Pacific Ocean.
Keep the positive vibrations flowing!
We love you!!
Barbie & Lyon

Saturday

Hello,
Today has been pretty much the same as yesterday. Lyon's pain comes and goes throughout the day. He will fall asleep and not press his pain pump and then wake up in excrutiating pain. He does not yet have his appetite back. It's all such a catch 22, the pain meds make him feel nausous so that he doesn't want any food, but the no food is making him nausious.
We got him out of bed today two times. He sat in a chair next to the bed and the second time he went for a stroll in the wheelchair to see the beautiful saltwater fish tank. Walking for him is still pretty much out of the question. I will try and push it for tomorrow, just a few steps. He sleeps most of the day right now, but we continue to keep his surf movies playing throughout the day. He will open his eyes and see a wave and tell us where it is in the world, then go right back to sleep. It's amazing how he knows this just from the break, or a landmark or the color of the ocean.
I just left him for the night with some Bob Marley playing in the background. Darrell is going to stay with him tonight and Harper and I will head over at around 6 am, so that we can catch the Doctor doing his rounds.
Let's put it out there that he will walk tomorrow and the pain will begin to subside!!!!!
Darrell leaves in the morning and my mom and Dale come in tomorrow late afternoon.
I'll write more tomorrow. This is definitely the hardest thing a mother should ever have to go through. He is so strong and so brave!!!! I tell him that I am so sorry that he has to go through this and he replies, "Don't be sorry Mom, this is my life and its just what I have to do." He gives me the strength to be strong and to keep moving forward. I am truly blessed to have him as my son!!!!!
Yesterday he seemed to be doing a lot better than today. I think he was still so out of it from the anesthesia that maybe everything had not hit him yet. Today he has been in a lot of pain. The nurses are having a hard time managing it so they have decided to change his pain meds from Morphine to Dilaudid. The meds are making him feel sick so he has not been able to eat much. A few bites here and there is all he can handle.
He is still a little charmer though. He gets all of the nurses to fall in love with him within the first 5 minutes of meeting them. He thanks them all for helping him and calls them all by their first names. He has also been passing out his bracelets to them. They can't believe how sweet and polite he is after what he has just gone through. One nurse suggested that he teach a course in nurse appreciation. That was cute!
Mr. Breams class at Malibu High sent him 8 pages of faxed letters all signed by the students and teachers from their European trip. We pasted them up on the wall in front of him so that he can read them. He loves all the emails as well. I log on for him and read them out loud.
Today we got him out of bed and sat him in a chair so that we could change the bedding. It was a pretty big ordeal. They removed almost all of his abdominal muscles, so he really has no strength yet to pull himself up and to move around. It was actually good to move him around for his circulation.
Troy, Ali and Randy all leave tomorrow and Darrell leaves on Sunday. I will be alone with Lyon and the baby for just a day until my mom and my brother Dale come in Sunday night. They will stay with us for all of next week and then we will all fly home together on the 22nd.
It's 11 pm now and I am going to try and get some sleep. Randy got some amazing footage in the OR He was able to come out half way through the surgery and show us on his camera the Doctors removing this huge mass. It was incredible!!! We had pre-op appointments from 8:30-5:00, and again, another day of extreme HEAT!!!! For those of you who do not know, Randy has joined us in Cleveland to continue his documentary on Lyon. We were followed around by him and two representatives of The Cleveland Clinic media relations department all day. The security at the hospital was heightened because President Bush was visiting the hospital today. WOW, what an entourage!!!
We feel good about the procedure tomorrow. This hospital, and the Doctors here are the best in the country without a doubt! They are all so optimistic and confident in the protocol they have chosen. I find great comfort in knowing that we are in the best of hands, and that there is truly nothing they have not seen. Lyon asked Randy if he would film the surgery tomorrow and Dr. Church said that he did not have a problem with it. So, Randy will be in the O.R., upon Lyons request. What a man!!!!!
Randy has become part of the family and we are honored to have his presence with us.
Surgery is scheduled for 12 noon, which will be 9 am LA time. Please wear your wrist bands and T-shirts tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!
There will be a sunrise prayer circle at the top of Point Dume at 5:30 am tomorrow. It will last about 30 minutes or so. We will be receiving the energy from this end at 8:30 am. We will be outside in the garden in meditation and we will light our healing candle and burn sage. The power of prayer and energy is so powerful and we are blessed to receive all of your love!
Lyon is in good spirits, as always! Last night we took him to Sushi and go-cart racing. It feels like we are on a humid, tropical island with no ocean to cool down with. I keep wanting to ask someone where the beach is. We got our room at The Ronald McDonald house. Nothing fancy, but lots of loving support. Last night upon our arrival we were fed dinner, made by a local church. We also had dinner with about 40 Amish folks. Two separate Amish children are staying here and I think the whole town came by for a Sunday night dinner. It was very impressive. It made me miss our home and our community. I know we would have had at least 100 people show up for a Sunday dinner for Lyon.
Today we are going to visit the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. There is a Clash exhibit that we have to catch. They are also showcasing some Doors memorabilia. Something fun to do before it all begins.
Tomorrow is a pretty heavy day. We start our pre-ops at 8:30 and end at 5:00. We don't have a surgery time yet for Wed. We have to call between 3 and 5 pm the day before to get the check in time.
I think everything is starting to hit Lyon now.
